Old Mutual is recruiting an Underwriting Manager, to be based in Windhoek, Namibia.
Duties
- Set and maintain standards for all operational levels of underwriting for OMSIC
- Interpret, implement and maintain custom-written policy wordings
- Adjust policy cover in special cases by writing endorsements to either extend, limit or modify cover provided by standard policy wordings
- Develop, implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for points 1 to 3
- Perform regular sampling of OMSIC book to test quality
- Evaluate, monitor and accept or decline Corporate and Accommodation risks
- Interpret statistics and monthly reports to make timeous and appropriate underwriting decisions at branch, division or even individual policy level
- Address and guide action on poor-performing risks or risk classes
- Manage OMSIC’s risk burden to OMSIC, including calculating and managing the risk of various portfolios and single businesses
- Maintain an intimate understanding of the treaties in place and required reinsurance to effectively negotiate, implement and maintain treaties
- Maintain accountability to corporate governance at all levels of operation
- ensure regular and accurate reporting within the underwriting team
- Liaise, consult and negotiate with internal as well as external stakeholders such as intermediaries, auditors, legal counsel, regulators and reinsurers
- Manage the underwriting team to ensure that they maintain a high standard of service delivery to OMSIC clients
- Provide training to the underwriting team as well as other OMSIC staff and stakeholders
- Manage the HR function for the underwriting team as well as all day-to-day staff administration
- Assist with the review and implementation of new systems/system upgrades as and when they occur
- Identify and provide strategic insight on market trends
- Participate in, provide strategic insight to and assist the OMSIC EXCO in delivering on OMSIC’s strategic objectives
Requistes
- Namibian citizen
- Relevant degree in Finance/Commerce, B.Com /Business Administration
- Insurance qualification; e.g. Associate or, preferably, Fellow of Insurance Institute
- Minimum of five years of short-term insurance experience, with at least two years in Commercial and Corporate underwriting
- At least five years of managerial experience
- Comprehensive practical knowledge of reinsurance, i.e. FAC, Treaty, etc
- Computer literacy, good numeric skills and excellent MS Office skills are essential
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to work independently, be proactive and provide strategic insight
- Ability to operate at a Tactical Strategy level of cognitive development with a proven track record of success in executing strategic objectives
- Excellent written and verbal communication as well as organisational skills
