Swakop Uranium is recruiting a Superintendent: Environment, to be based in Swakopmund, Namibia.
Description
- Manage the Environmental section to effectively ensure implementation of Swakop Uranium’s Environmental Management Plan, through an appropriate Environmental Management System
- To review, evaluate and analyse the Company’s mining environment, and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent damage caused by chemical, physical and biological agents ensuring corporate sustainable development
- The position is also responsible for the management of systems, in order to inspect, audit and enforce compliance to environmental management laws and regulations, including the management of any new EIA’s to ensure the implementation of the commitments of the subsequent EMP’s, ensure continuous stakeholder engagement from an environmental point of view, and to oversee the development and implementation of mine closure planning
Duties
- Manage the Swakop Uranium (SU) Environmental Management systems to align with strategic business and environmental objectives
- Interpret and apply all relevant environmental statutory requirements, regulations and standards
- Compile, implement and review Annual Environmental Work Plan aligned to the DOAM
- Ensure a relevant and effective Environmental Database is developed and maintained for records relating to monitoring results and environmental incidences and non-conformances
- Conduct workplace processing of hazards, identification and comprehensive risk assessment which involve development and recommendation.
- Conduct industry benchmarking to ensure best practice and legal requirements are followed
- Compile Env Management Systems and Design management which includes the EMP, Objectives, Procedures, Control and Measure Standards (Compile)
- Effective contractor/consultant/supplier management in terms of environmental services
- Assist and guide line management to implement the environmental codes of practice, policies and procedures
- Design, implement and co-ordinate an audit system (internal and external) as per EMP requirements and noted areas for improvement
- Effective Incident management and closure
- Develop and maintain ENV section training matrix
- Raise awareness & provide technical guidance, at all levels of an organisation, of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility
Requisites
- BSc Honours degree in Environmental Management/Science or similar qualification
- A relevant postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage
- 8 years’ experience in environmental management activities within the mining industry of which 3 years should have been on a management level
- Experience in Environmental Aspect/Impact Management programme/systems management
- ISO 14001 Internal Auditors certification
- Sound understanding of national and international environmental standards (best practices) and legislation
- Sound knowledge in the application of ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and other EHS initiatives
- Code B or BE Driver’s License
