Kelp Blue is recruiting a Marine Monitoring Technician, to be based in Lüderitz, Namibia.
Description
  • As a Marine Monitoring Technician, the successful candidate will work within the Marine Monitoring team, playing a hands-on role in data capture, including but not limited to, running acoustic surveys, capturing drone imagery, and conducting routine water quality/ecology monitoring
  • The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring maintenance of monitoring equipment/stock and preparation of said equipment for monitoring activities
  • Lastly, the successful candidate will support analysis activities within the laboratory and assessments of biomass available for harvest
Duties
  • Lead drone content capture activities, including but not limited to, weekly capture of farm biomass images, harvest imagery and other content required by the company
  • Oversee documentation and SOP’s for drone activities, as well as compliance of drone activities thereof
  • Investigate means to improve the quality/ type of aerial footage captured to expand on biomass insights
  • Support the review of sensor/ equipment SOP’s and maintenance of sensors/ equipment thereof
  • Support routine water quality and ecology monitoring activities, ensuring all required equipment is prepped and assisting with the activities thereof
  • Oversee routine in-situ surveys of harvestable biomass to validate harvest recommendations
  • Support completion of routine SONAR surveys of the farm for identification of kelp success
  • Support laboratory processing of water quality and ecology samples from analysis to data capture
  • Assist with workstream procurement and ensuring materials needed for outdoor monitoring and laboratory activities are always present in stock
Requisites
  • Skills and Qualifications:
  • BSc in biological sciences/ environmental sciences or similar science qualification
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in environmental monitoring or equivalent field
  • Experience operating a drone or similar remote sensing technologies
  • Experience working with monitoring equipment/ sensory instruments is advantageous
  • Experience working at or around the ocean is advantageous
  • Happy to conduct routine and administrative tasks relevant to work scope
  • Detail orientated and meticulous in daily activities
