B2Gold is recruiting an Environmental Specialist (m/f), to be based in Otjiwarongo, Namibia.
Description
  • To implement the Environmental Management System (EMS) and provide technical/scientific expertise in order to reduce the environmental impact of operational activities and coordinate the planning and administration of operational delivery, and performance on all environmental protection programs
Duties
Environmental Compliance
  • Ensure compliance to national legislation requirements, B2Gold obligations and applicable regional, international legislation, corporate requirements and best practice standards
  • Ensure communication and implementation of site specific Environmental Management Plan (EMP) obligations and permit requirements
  • Ensure compliance to all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures
Environmental Management System
  • Implement, maintain and continually improve the Otjikoto mine site integrated HSE Management System, in particular the environmental aspects of the system
  • Coordinate the identification, assessment and management of environmental risks/impacts of the Otjikoto mine operation
  • Identify and recommend environmental improvement plans on resources, management systems, statutory non-compliances, policy commitments, risks, stakeholder concerns and key performance indicators
  • Plan and coordinate all the environmental monitoring and measurement programs
  • Adequately support employee’s understanding and application of significant impacts on the operations by developing, scheduling and conducting relevant training
  • Develop and update environmental procedures and provide technical review and guidance
  • Manage contractor compliance with B2Gold’s HSE standards and contract agreements
  • Manage the environmental incidents and corrective actions system
  • Plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate routine inspections and internal environmental audits
Environmental Performance
  • Implement the B2Gold Environmental and Biodiversity Performance standards and ensure all the requirements are understood by the responsible departments
  • Coordinate environmental monitoring, measurement and results tracking
  • Manage the environmental databases, including QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control)
  • Coordinate operations of the Bio-remediation treatment and landfill sites to ensure optimum performance of facilities
  • Manage the energy and climate change programme for Otjikoto mine and development of GHG inventories
  • Promote environmental awareness to the Otjikoto mine employees, contractors and visitors
  • Compile monthly reports and other applicable technical reports
Closure and Rehabilitation
  • Coordinate the implementation of all rehabilitation activities as per the Closure and rehabilitation plan
  • Assist with closure and rehabilitation planning process reviews and updates
  • Assist with Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) closure estimates of the operations
  • Liaise with relevant consultants and institutions on research opportunities for mine rehabilitation
Administration and budget
  • Assist with budgeting requirements for the Department
  • Ensure departmental supplies and resources are adequate and well controlled
  • Ensure compliance to budget
Staff Management
  • Monitor performance of staff to ensure KPI’s are achieved
  • Review performance of staff, provide positive feedback and guide rectifying behaviour, as necessary
  • Assist each staff member in compiling a Personal Development Plan [PDP] and ensure on the job coaching or other appropriate training interventions TNA
  • Implement all relevant HR policies and procedures
Requisites
  • Minimum B.Sc. Degree in Environmental Management (NQF Level 7)
  • Minimum 5 years’ environmental management experience of which at least 2 years must be operational experience in the mining industry, running an Environmental Management System and supervising a team
  • Environmental Auditing certification
  • Experience and knowledge of air quality and GHG (Greenhouse gases) emission quantification methodologies
  • Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO14001:2015 will be an advantage
  • Advanced computer literacy (MS Excel)
  • Valid code B driver’s license
