Capricorn Group is recruiting a Database Engineer, to be based in Windhoek, Namibia.
Description
  • The Database Engineer will be responsible for the installation, administration, documentation, configuration, and monitoring of database servers in a multi-country and multi-site environment. The Database Engineer will be part of the database support team providing 24x7x365 related on-call support for the database infrastructure and security environments. This position will engage with other support staff to monitor, diagnose, and resolve database/related issues for all Capricorn Group entities and Subsidiaries
  • Primary Purpose of This Position:
  • *Strategic Contribution:
  • The Database Engineer owns and extends the business’ data pipeline through the collection, storage, processing, and transformation of large datasets
  • It is his/her duty to monitor the existing metrics, analyze data, and lead partnerships with other Data and Analytics teams to identify and implement the system and process improvements
  • He/she supports key database management systems that avail structured and timely access to actionable business insights
  • *Operational contribution:
  • This role needs to work closely with the system, network, desktop engineers, service desk agents as well application teams to provide technical support on the various server and database platforms. This includes new solutions as well as modifications to existing database systems and solutions. The Database Engineer will hold a key role in testing, documenting, and reviewing database-based solutions in these various areas
  • For current and new solutions, the Database Engineer requires to engage with the systems, network, desktop engineers, service desk agents as well as application teams to monitor, diagnose and resolve database-related issues and incidents. In certain cases, given the level of complexity, the Database Engineer will need to participate in the primary analysis and resolution of database-related problems and requests
  • In case of database system-related problems and challenges, the Database Engineer will be responsible for resolving and escalating issues as per agreed Service Level Agreements
  • The Database Engineer will participate in the performance monitoring, trend analysis, and advanced troubleshooting of various database environments in the organization
  • The Database Engineer has to ensure that all database-based systems operate to agreed service levels. This includes proactive and reactive monitoring and problem-solving, analysis, and maintenance of the database infrastructure
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of database environments by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature, and user abuse
  • Develop schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations
  • The Database Engineer will also be required to travel from time to time to each of the countries where the Capricorn Group has offices and/or subsidiaries
Duties
  • KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPAs):
  • Maintain the database system infrastructure and resolve any issues that might occur
  • Continuously improve and enhance existing database management elements, processes, and procedures
  • Monitor database system infrastructure performance, availability, and uptimes
  • Report and escalate any database system breaches
  • Understand and focus on the system governance, guidelines, and adherence to PCI-DSS standards, processes, and procedures. Where shortcomings exist then they are to be brought into line
  • Ensure continuous improvement of database availability, scalability, and reliability with a strong focus on improving efficiencies at the same time
  • Install setup and maintain database system monitoring tools and performance management tools
  • Research, participate and investigate new technologies and trends to ensure that the CIH group database systems are in line with the latest technologies and trends and recommend ways for the CIH group to take advantage of new technologies
  • Join troubleshooting blogs, support forums, and web groups
  • Adhere to, maintain, and improve standards, policies, and procedures as database systems are updated or upgraded or requirements changes are made
  • Disaster Recovery, ensure that in the event of a DR, the affected area in the group can be recovered and the security integrity of the group is not compromised
  • Document all database system procedures including installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting guides where applicable, and keep the documentation up to date
  • Liaise with the system product vendor regarding re-calls, patches, updates, etc.
  • Develop new database system and application implementation plans and custom scripts to ensure operational reliability

  • Experience/Knowledge & Skills:
  • 3 years of extensive hands-on experience as a Database Administrator
  • Good SQL Scripting skills
  • Knowledge and or experience with Oracle/MS SQL
  • Hands-on ability to aid in Incident and Problem resolution PCI-DSS Knowledge
  • Database architectures and design
  • Practical experience in DB High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Principles and practices of advanced database administration
  • Industry design and configuration standards for enterprise databases
  • Good communication (both verbal and written) skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Project management skills
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Good Administration management skills
  • Self-confidence and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under minimal supervision are a must

  • Qualifications:
  • Degree/Diploma in IT
  • MCDBA Certifications/MCITP Certifications
  • Oracle Database certification
  • ITIL Foundation certification is an advantage
  • Experience with database servers in a virtualized environment
